Will top managers give these young kids a chance? Premier League bosses have their say on England's Under 17 World Cup winners

  • England's talented crop of youngsters beat Spain in Under 17 World Cup final
  • Now challenge is to develop into stars for their clubs but it is tricky step up
  • Jurgen Klopp congratulated striker Rhian Brewster for his achievement
  • Roy Hodgson admitted it is unlikely Nya Kirby will be given chance soon

Premier League managers are often tempted to shy away from blooding youngsters in favour of more reliable senior players.

But with England's talented crop of Under 17 World Cup winners the future looks rosy for homegrown talent in the Premier League.

A number of Premier League managers have had their say on the excellent showing of youngsters from their club.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool, manager of Rhian Brewster:

‘Unbelievable. Congratulations (to Rhian) from Liverpool. A good day. You scored only one? We’re really proud. Have a nice party. Enjoy it, no alcohol! Have a nice party with Coca-Cola and Fanta and whatever. See you soon.’

Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace and manager of Nya Kirby:

‘I very much doubt that we can throw an under-17 into our situation at the moment. But I'm delighted for him, for England, I think it's very good reward for the good work that's been going on at St George's Park for a number of years now – certainly all the time I was at England, five, six years.

‘I think the clubs and academy systems have to take a lot of credit because now we are producing players who are as technically proficient, as athletic as the type of teams we're meeting in these World Cup competitions.

‘The age groups of under-17, under-20s, under-19s, under-21s have all done well. So it's hats off. I'm delighted for Nya, I shall look forward to congratulating him personally when he returns from India and I shall of course take a close interest in him. ‘

Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham, manager of Tashan Oakley-Boothe:

‘From pre-season he was involved because he is a very talented player. He is a midfielder, box-to-box, good quality, good footballer, and I hope he will be important for us in the next few years.

'He’s a very nice kid, from a nice family, a lovely kid really. I don’t know how we got him from Highbury Grove school because it’s an Arsenal area. But I know his mum lives around there, so Tashan does too.’

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City, manager of Phil Foden, Curtis Anderson and Joel Latibeaudiere:

‘Phil since the beginning of this season, he came to the United States, he played against United in our friendly game where he played unbelievable. And after with Real Madrid.

'He trains with us every single day. He is a young player, just 17 years old, he is a young player but he is of course a player in our squad. He is every day in the locker room with the guys so it’s the best way to learnt from the experienced guys, what does the high level mean?

'It is so important for him, Man City, everybody, he has played in a high, high level in that competition. At the end, we cannot forget, he played in a World Cup.

England are world champions and when that guy will grow, and will play in the future in the World Cup, they have lived that situation before and they know what they have to do. That good for English football.

'The manager, all the staff, all the players – big congratulations because they needed that. It happened in Spain. Span was always semi-finals, finals at young ages. Since then? Won it every time.

Foden benefitted from going rather than staying?

‘We played for example last day in Carabao Cup. If in my mind he has to play every weekend he would have stayed here. But maybe would have played in the second team this month.

And it is better to play the World Cup, against Spain, Brazil, Germany, against all the African teams, see how is the situation there, than the second league they play in.

There are no crowds, nobody, they don’t compete realistically to play in the high levels. That’s why I think for all the English players, not just Phil, our other two, to being in a big experience of their lives.’

Antonio Conte, Chelsea, manager of Callum Hudson-Odoi, George McEachran, Marcus Guehi and Jonathan Panzo:

‘I am very happy for our players, and sometimes [Callum-Hudson] Odoi came with us.

‘I am very happy because it means our academy is working very well. Against Everton, Ampadu played for the first time and he is only 17 years old. Don’t forget that my first appearance in my career in Serie A, I was only 16 years old. I think I am the best person to give this possibility, if I see it.

‘I repeat, in my experience at Juventus, Paul Pogba was only 18 years old. I repeat I want to give these possibilities – but you have to deserve these possibilities. He is not an England player, only 17 years old, but he deserves to stay with us and to develop, to be the future of Chelsea.’
