Jose Mourinho hit out at Manchester United fans after Spurs win... but it is not the first time he's criticised his own supporters

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho slammed fans of the Old Trafford club for their perceived lack of support of Romelu Lukaku after they beat Spurs on Saturday.

It was a tempestuous response from Mourinho, who has had a habit of hitting out at his own players, owners and fans throughout his managerial career, which is rarely without controversy.

Sportsmail has taken a look at all of the times he has turned on his own supporters during his career.

When did the criticism happen?

After Chelsea's 2-1 win against QPR, November 2014.

What did Mourinho say about the fans?

'Everyone knows how much I feel connected to this club and the fans. At this moment it's difficult for us to play at home though, because playing here is like playing in an empty stadium.

'The team then starts playing like it's a quiet, soft game at home. It's difficult to get that strong start where the players, team and fans at Stamford Bridge [are all together].

'I was today looking around and it was empty, but not in terms of people because it was obviously full. That's what frustrating.'

Why did Mourinho hit out at the supporters?

This runs contrary to the usual Mourinho jibe as it came with his team at the top of the Premier League.

It's rare to see him act like this when all is going well, as it did for Chelsea in 2014-15.

The Portuguese might have been reacting because the display against a poor QPR side was lacking intensity and would be criticised, despite Chelsea picking up three points.

PS. This incident led to opposition fans chanting 'Mourinho was right, your fans are s***e' at Chelsea supporters.

When did the criticism happen?

Following the win against Hull and before Manchester United's game against Liverpool, January 2017.

What did Mourinho say about the fans?

'I think in the first half the players have to do better, I have to do better, the fans – they also have to do better.

'Maybe I didn't do my job well – maybe I should have brought more tension to the dynamic to prepare the game. The players have to improve, I have to improve, the fans, I'm sorry, have to improve. We are responsible for fans' participation in the game.

'If we play very well, enthusiastically the fans – they come to the pitch to play with us. We have amazing fans, what I feel is Sunday is a special match for us – special match for the Man United fans. So my invitation is don't come to the theatre, come to play, play with us.'

Why did Mourinho hit out at the supporters?

Mourinho spent a lot of his first season at Manchester United under some pressure. An expected title challenge did not pan out.

As a result, he focused on trophies like the League Cup - and an eventual Europa League win - but United fans did not seem particularly enthusiastic about the former trophy, judging by their response to a win against Hull in the semi-final.

And Mourinho was not happy about that, hitting out before a game against fierce rivals Liverpool, when he knew fans would play an important role.

When did the criticism happen?

Following United's 2-0 win against Leicester, August 2017.

What did Mourinho say about the fans?

'I didn't see the first goal. I was speaking with Jesse Lingard because Lingard was going to be the next player to come on.

'I saw the ball in the net and all the guys jumping around. It was the first time I saw the crowd. They were very quiet.

'It was easy to know that was a goal because it was the first time I really understood the stadium was full.'

Why did Mourinho hit out at the supporters?

Mourinho came into this season with the expectation that he would make a concerted push for the title. His side started well, with two straight 4-0 wins, and this might have been the issue in August.

Alex Ferguson regularly criticised supporters for an expectation that United would simply entertain them. A crowd of 75,021 against Leicester seemed to slip into that outlook, which meant Mourinho had to round on them for not providing his players with the inspiration to break down the Foxes.

When did the criticism happen?

This Saturday, after United beat Spurs 1-0.

What did Mourinho say about the fans?

'I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don't support (Romelu Lukaku) so much because he gives everything.

'I think it is not fair when scoring the goal or not scoring the goal makes the whole difference. I don't think it is fair at all. So I'm a bit disappointed - but not with him. With him, I'm very pleased.

'I don't understand when some people question. Are they Red Devils?'

Why did Mourinho hit out at supporters?

This is a classic case of Mourinho deflection, although one that was probably unnecessary given his team picked up the result. Lukaku had struggled but Mourinho hauled off Marcus Rashford to put on Anthony Martial.

That substitution was met with jeers, understandable given the young English striker had been one of the better players on the pitch and deserved to stay on. It seemed like a defensive change.

Lukaku would set up Martial's winner, justifying Mourinho's decision, but clearly the reaction of the fans upset the manager.
