The two English representatives in this year's Europa League experienced contrasting fortunes on Thursday evening, as Arsenal progressed to the knockout stages while Everton crashed out of the competition.

The Gunners played out a bore draw at home to Serbian outfit Red Star Belgrade while Everton's disastrous campaign continued with a 3-0 loss away at Lyon.

But what about the night's finer details? Sportsmail have provided a handy list of things you might not have spotted from the Europa League action.

Arsenal fan makes puzzling decision

Arsenal may have advanced to the knockout stages but the goalless draw against Red Star Belgrade which sealed their path will not live long in the memory.

And one supporter at the Emirates was clearly less than enthralled by the action on the pitch, preferring to finish his Sudoku puzzle rather than watch his team play.

Still at least he turned up. Arsenal's official attendance of 58,285 was fooling no one as vast numbers of empty seats could be seen around the ground.

Dark Knight rises at the Emirates

What does one do after earning a hard-fought point at the Emirates? Take your shirt off and give it to the travelling away fans? Maybe. Take your shorts off, too? Hmm...

Well that's what Marko Gobeljic did for Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night.

However, in doing so the 25-year-old revealed some Batman underwear... An interesting choice to say the least.

Carragher's not forgotten in France

Boyhood Everton fan Jamie Carragher would have dreamed of having Toffees fans hold up a banner with his name as a youngster.

And away at the Groupama Stadium, Everton's travelling fans duly obliged as they watched their side crash out of the competition against Lyon.

But unfortunately for Carragher, it wasn't particularly complimentary as Everton's fans declared the Liverpool legend smelled of p***.

Lyon fans go all Taxi Driver

The disparaging Carragher banner wasn't the only eye-catching display on show at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday night.

Lyon fans produced a gigantic tifo referencing the famous 'You talking to me?' quote from Robert De Niro's character Travis Bickle in cult film Taxi Driver.

And the tifo clearly had the desired effect in intimidating Everton's defence, as the French side ran riot to secure a 3-0 victory and dump the Toffees out.

Everton become England's worst Europa League team ever

Everton's season went from bad to worse as their miserable Europa League campaign was brought to a premature end with the defeat in France.

Not only had Everton made the worst start by an English team to a Europa League campaign ever, with one point from three matches, they also became the first English side to get knocked out after just four games.

Historically bad stuff as Everton break records for all the wrong reasons, officially qualifying for the title of the worst English side since the competition's inception in 2009-10.

Unsworth keeping one eye on Sunday?

Caretaker boss Unsworth's audition for the permanent role hasn't exactly gone to plan, with three defeats from his three matches in charge.

Unsworth has made some big calls in his games so far, hauling off senior players Kevin Mirallas and Aaron Lennon for youngster Beni Baningime and outcast Oumar Niasse at half time against Leicester.

And for the trip to Lyon, the club icon chose to leave experienced heads Wayne Rooney and Leighton Baines at home perhaps with one eye on Sunday's visit of Watford. Needless to say, the decision backfired.
