Tottenham join Arsenal in battle for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka after Mauricio Pochettino sends scouts to watch Bundesliga side
- Mauricio Pochettino has had scouts watching Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka
- Arsenal were favourites for the 22-year-old but Tottenham have joined the race
- The German midfielder will be out of contract at the end of the season
Tottenham will attempt to ambush Arsenal's attempts to lure Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka to the Emirates Stadium in January.
The 22-year-old has been on the Gunners' watch list and was subject to a summer move which eventually fizzled out.
According to the Mirror though, Mauricio Pochettino is looking to beat his North London rivals to the German midfielder's signature.
Leon Goretzka is to be caught in a tug of war between Arsenal and Tottenham
The Mirror claimed Pochettino has kept a watch over the midfielder, having reportedly had a scout present at all of Schalke's Bundesliga fixtures this season.
Goretzka is out of contract at the end of the season, so both will have to move quick for the youngster with reports from Germany and Spain claiming Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also keeping him under a close watch.
He has featured in nine of Schalke's 11 Bundesliga fixtures so far this season - missing their previous two with injury - and has become an important part of a Schalke side clinging on to a Champions League spot.
Arsene Wenger had attempted to secure the Schalke midfielder in the summer
The youngster undoubtedly fits the Pochettino remit with plenty of time to grow and develop, a trait that has been the source of Spurs' current blossoming English talent in Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Harry Winks.
Competition for places is fierce at both clubs though, and it may prove too much for the young German to trade a regular spot in Germany for the bench in the Premier League.
Arsenal take on Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
But the Mirror has reported that Mauricio Pochettino has had scouts monitoring him all season
