'He just said he'd got bad news, that he had throat cancer. It was one of those moments and everything goes out of the window.

'If I could just play the best I could, help the team as much as I could it would make him stronger and help him recover quicker.

'Every time I stepped over the white line I would think of him. What I could do on the pitch to try to help him get strong again.'

Whilst Henderson and his family were facing an immensely difficult time personally, his performances on the pitch led Liverpool to a remarkable run of 11 victories in a row.

Brendan Rodgers' side ended up falling just short of the Premier League title and thankfully Brian underwent successful surgery but the lessons from that period have been carried forward by Henderson.

'Sometimes you can look at pressure in different ways, you hear news like that and it puts everything else in perspective.

'I feel as though I was definitely stronger from that moment on, it made us more of a man,' he concluded.
