Talking of the international break, are you looking forward to rugby’s Autumn Internationals? From Luke in Strood

Last weekend, I had a rare Saturday where I was not working and decided to watch the Barbarians against New Zealand.

This was the fixture that gave us the greatest try ever scored in 1973 and the Barbarians were quite brilliant again last week.

The All Blacks came good in the end but the Barbarians were magnificent.

What do you make of all the players pulling out of the England squad? From Greg in Brighton

When I played, I had lots of targets throughout the season such as winning the Premier League and qualifying for the World Cup or Euros.

You have to manage your energy levels and October and November are months when players tend to get injured more often.

I have no problem with Harry Kane wanting to rest up — as long as it means he is in scintillating form when it matters at the World Cup next summer.

It also gives a chance for other players to prove themselves to Gareth Southgate ahead of the finals in Russia.

What are your memories of playing against Germany? From Laura in Birmingham

I was part of the England side which beat Germany in Charleroi at Euro 2000.

I played with an extra determination that day because I didn’t have the honour of playing at Euro 96.

That season, I felt I had been playing some of the best football of my career under Bruce Rioch at Arsenal. I thought I would have been perfect for that tournament.

It is always in the back of your mind that you want to play Germany. I was born just a few days before the World Cup final in 1966 and when I was kicking a ball at eight years old, England had only recently been world champions.

Germany, Italy, Brazil, Holland — these are the top nations you dreamed of playing against. Whenever you played Germany, it felt like 1966 was being rekindled.

Who would you go for as Everton manager? From Mike in Liverpool

I can see the wisdom of appointing Sam Allardyce.

He offers an experience and know-how to get Everton out of this situation.

Everton’s last-gasp victory over Watford has bought the board some breathing space.

This is the first time that Everton have replaced a manager mid-season since David Moyes was appointed in 2002, so they need time to make the right decision.

Allardyce has a pragmatic approach to management which will be vital in keeping them in the Premier League, but will it be the right fit for Everton in the long-term?

I arrived at Goodison having played for Aston Villa under Graham Taylor, who played pragmatic, percentage football.

In my first game, I drilled the ball into the channel for Graeme Sharp to run into and received a telling-off.

I was told that I had to play balls to feet. Every training session was total football.

If Allardyce does come to Everton, maybe it means he is willing to play a bit more expansively.

Can David Moyes turn things around at West Ham? From Dave in Essex

I am not confident at all. A West Ham fan asked me this week to name three teams worse than them and at the moment you would struggle to do so.

When you look at the size of the club, the infrastructure and the players available, West Ham should not be in this position. Only time will tell if they have made the right decision on hiring David Moyes.

He does not have to work this team to death. Much has been made of West Ham’s distance covered and high-intensity runs. It is not about how far you run, it is about making intelligent movement.

What he has to do is connect with each of his players quickly. When Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal, he had a 15-minute interview with every single player. If he has not done so already, Moyes should do the same.

Are Chelsea suffering from letting Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku go? From Darren in Dartford

These players are all so talented that it clearly was the wrong decision for Chelsea to let them go.

But when these decisions were made, these players were not better than those in Chelsea’s first team.

It is always difficult to keep one eye on the future and Chelsea had already sent Salah and Lukaku out on loan.

For me, Salah has been the signing of the season. He and Sadio Mane are a match made in heaven for Liverpool.

He makes these tremendous runs — and nine times out of 10 will put the ball in the back of the net at the end of them.

Which of the big six has been the biggest disappointment? From Jon in Carlisle

Liverpool and Arsenal in equal measure. Liverpool have lost the plot at times in defence and Jurgen Klopp cannot be completely happy with how things have gone this season.

With Arsenal, the speed at which they have fallen out of the Premier League title race has been hugely disappointing.

Arsenal were lukewarm against Manchester City. Where is the ambition? Where is the club going now?

This summer, Arsene Wenger will be entering the final year of his contract while Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez look like they will be leaving.

The club will be at a crossroads and it must be draining for the players.

What will it take to play players like Jack Wilshere, who actually want to play for the club?

Can anyone catch Manchester City? From Phil in London

I have been in situations where you feel invincible and everyone is saying nice things about your team.

But Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team haven’t won anything yet. They don’t know what’s going to happen for the rest of the season.

If we want the Premier League to be more competitive, we have to hope that someone can take points off them.

They have been helped by the fact that their rivals have been chipping away at each other. United beat Tottenham and then lost at Chelsea. Those results are perfect for City.

We have a Manchester derby on the horizon at Old Trafford at the start of December. By then, Jose Mourinho may feel he has to go for it. A draw will not be good enough.

It has the potential to be a rip-roaring game... and it will be fascinating to see if Mourinho changes his tactics to win this big game.

Who is looking like player of the season? From Rob in Manchester

If Kevin De Bruyne did not play another game all season, he would still be my player of the year.

He is Manchester City’s paintbrush — everything he does is with beauty.

De Bruyne seems to have a helicopter vision of passes that you can only see sitting up in the stand.

He has such imagination and is picking passes that he cannot possibly see. De Bruyne has a sense of exactly where his team-mates are going to be.
