Joe Hart — Plane

West Ham goalkeeper under growing pressure from Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland for the starting jersey but he has now started 11 of Gareth Southgate's 14 matches in charge and will go to Russia.

Joe Gomez — In Balance

A rare example of a young English talent receiving opportunities at the highest level, Gomez has already made 10 starts for Liverpool this season and versatility across the backline appeals to Gareth Southgate. Another confident display here gives him a real chance.

John Stones — Plane

Stone has been the outstanding defender in the Premier League this season and he is the one guaranteed starter at the heart of England defence. Pep Guardiola turning him into the defender we all hoped he would become.

Harry Maguire — In Balance

Southgate clearly admires Maguire's blend of silk and steel but it has been a testing start to his Leicester career and he was the least convincing of England's back three both here and against Germany.

Kyle Walker — Plane

Walker has already improved under Guardiola's guidance and will edge ahead of former Tottenham team-mate Kieran Trippier at the World Cup. Handled the double threat of Neymar and Marcelo admirably.

Eric Dier — Plane

Mauricio Pochettino thinks he will eventually become a defender but Dier fancies himself as a holding midfielder. Protected the defence well here and certain to start in his favoured position in Russia.

Jake Livermore — On the Beach

A decent Premier League midfielder but that is the extent of it. Behind Harry Winks, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana in the race for a midfield position.

Ryan Bertrand — Plane

Barring the unexpected resurrection of Luke Shaw, Bertrand will be the back-up choice for Danny Rose in Russia. No thrills but no spills. Comfortably ahead of third-choice Aaron Cresswell and Kieran Gibbs.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek — In Balance

Thrilling debut against Germany but forced off by injury 35 minutes into his second England appearance. Kept discipline well as England chased shadows early on but will need to make a big impact at Crystal Palace to earn World Cup place.

Marcus Rashford — Plane

Eight goals already for the season and carries his fearless form for Manchester United into England games. We must hope Rashford, Dele Alli and Harry Kane strike up a real understanding.

Jamie Vardy — Plane

Early foul on Dani Alves might have spelled trouble in a competitive game. But his bite and direct running offers a unique threat. May turn 31 in January but his pace is undiminished.

What about the boys on the bench?

Jesse Lingard (for Loftus Cheek, 35) — In the Balance

Dominic Solanke (for Vardy, 75) — On the Beach

Tammy Abraham (for Rashford, 75) — On the Beach

Ashley Young (for Bertrand, 80) — In the Balance

Danny Rose (for Livermore, 89) — Plane
