But former Manchester United winger Giggs pondered if Loftus-Cheek is at a level where he can play back-to-back games at such a high standard.

'I think you've seen with the likes of Marcus Rashford, that robustness is now there because he's had 18 months to two years playing top level football,' Giggs told ITV Sport.

'Loftus-Cheek just hasn't had that so when you've got the high of Friday night and then you've got to do it again on the Tuesday night then it's tough if your body isn't ready for it.'

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright, who joined Giggs as a pundit for ITV's coverage of the game at Wembley, added: 'Is that why you would have rested him, Giggsy?'

'He's not done it at the top level for a long period of time but hopefully the injury isn't too bad,' Giggs replied.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson faces an anxious wait on whether Loftus-Cheek will be fit for the Premier League clash at home to Everton on Saturday.
