Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has ordered his team-mates to be realistic about their title ambitions after losing further ground on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have slipped to fourth position and are now 11 points behind City in the race for the title after losing the north London derby against Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday.

The defeat to the Gunners - their second to one of the big six sides in just three weeks, after also losing to Manchester United - has left their title hopes in tatters and led to serious reservations about their credentials.

The tumble in their domestic form has also seen them go from genuine title contenders to top-four hopefuls and has led to Lloris binning optimism for more measured targets.

'Before we think about City it's important to stay in the top four. This is the main target for our team,' he said.

'We heard from outside that Tottenham play for the title, blah, blah, blah. The most important thing is to stay consistent in the league.

'We have been in the top four the last two years and we need to carry on, to settle the club in this position and try to get more experience because the team is still young, then reduce the gap with the best.

'Obviously the future for Tottenham will be bright if we keep the same mentality. It's our ambition, but step by step.

'It's true that we wanted to do more against Manchester United and Arsenal. Unfortunately, we couldn't do that so now it's important to have a run of victories because we need to keep our place at the top.'

Spurs can rest the Premier League aside for now as they turn their attentions back to the Champions League. They return to action in the competition on Tuesday with a tricky away trip to Borussia Dortmund.

Pochettino's side have fared much better in Europe, currently siting top of Group H above La Liga giants Real Madrid and have already qualified for the knockout rounds.
