Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wore a yellow ribbon on his jumper during Monday's Champions League press conference.

Guardiola told reporters that he had donned the small badge as a gesture of support for imprisoned politicians Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez, who remain incarcerated amid the row over Catalan independence.

Cuixart and Sanchez — presidents of political groups Omnium and ANC — were locked up last month accused of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement.

Spain's state prosecutor is seeking to punish the duo for allowing a vote to declare Catalonian independence in October.


Guardiola was born in Santpedor in central Catalonia and became a club icon for Catalan club Barcelona, winning multiple domestic and European titles as both a player and a manager. 

The 46-year-old wore a similar ribbon during City's 3-1 win over Arsenal earlier this month when he said: 'I hope that the politicians in prison can leave as soon as possible for their families.

'If it can happen to them then it can happen to us. For giving an opinion. People shouldn't be confused and think it couldn't happen to them, because it can.'

City host Feyenoord on Tuesday when they will be looking to continue their 100 per cent record in this season's Champions League.

A maximum 12 points from their first four games has already guaranteed City a place in the last 16, so Guardiola is expected to rest some key players.
