For all of Tottenham's development under Mauricio Pochettino... the Argentine has won just ONCE away at the big sides since taking over

  • Tottenham have won just one of their last 17 league games away at the big sides
  • Under Mauricio Pochettino they have not won at Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool
  • They won at the Etihad in 2016 but have lost all trips to Old Trafford since 2014
  • At Tottenham, Pochettino's sides have earned just nine points from a possible 51

Statistics can be used to prove anything, so says the old adage.

And for supporters of Tottenham, finishing second in the Premier League last season — above rivals Arsenal — was proof enough that the balance of power had shifted in north London.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have developed into one of the most exciting and promising teams in European football.

Based around an English core of Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Kane, they have finished second and third in the previous two seasons and recently outplayed Real Madrid at Wembley.

But there remains one significant blot on their copybook.

Since taking over, Pochettino has won only once at the other so-called big sides in the division.

In 17 away matches in the Premier League against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea since 2014-2015, Spurs have taken nine points from a possible 51.

Like most sides in the division, Tottenham have historically struggled against the traditional big guns of English football. They have not beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge since the start of the Premier League and have won just six of 101 league games at United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

It's a problem Pochettino has so far failed to solve. Since joining Spurs in May 2014, Spurs have won drawn six and lost 10 of their away league matches against their title rivals. Saturday's 2-0 defeat by rivals Arsenal was but the latest setback.

The solitary victory came at against Manchester City in February 2016, when Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen fired them to a 2-1 victory at the Etihad.

Against City's rivals United, Spurs have failed to pick up a point or score a goal in their four most recent trips to Old Trafford, while their last six games at Anfield and Stamford Bridge have garnered only two points from a possible 18.

In the north London derby, too, Spurs have struggled away from home. Saturday's defeat at the Emirates was their first loss in four league meetings under Pochettino. But the Argentine is still yet to mastermind a win at the Arsenal.

Across the 17 trips to the top sides in the division since 2014, Spurs have scored, on average, less than a goal a game (14), while conceding an average of nearly two per 90 minutes (31).

They have also had fewer shots (191 vs 238) than their opposition in these clashes and managed to steer just 65 (7.3 per cent) on target, compared to 93 from their rivals (13 per cent).
