  • The ex-England star's third goal against the Hammers was struck from 59.7 yards
  • Martin Keown described the strike as 'one of the great Premier League moments'
  • Owen Hargreaves suggested that it was the best goal of Rooney's entire career

Martin Keown credited Wayne Rooney with creating 'one of the great moments in the Premier League' after the Everton star scored a fine hat-trick against West Ham.

Rooney completed his three-goal haul in Wednesday's 4-0 rout by finding the net from 59.7 yards as he arrowed a first-time shot over stranded Hammers goalkeeper Joe Hart, who had raced out of his penalty area to clear a through ball.

The former England skipper had scored against West Ham from near the halfway line before, but this goal was even better than his 2014 strike for Manchester United at Upton Park.

In fact, according to former United team-mate Owen Hargreaves, this was probably the best goal of Rooney's career.

Hargreaves told BT Sport: 'He scored the most goals ever for Manchester United and the most goals ever for England, but I don't think Wayne Rooney's ever scored a better goal.

'That City one maybe but technically that goal sums up Wayne Rooney in a nutshell.

'Even the audacity to try that and execute it from there. It was an amazing goal.'

Fellow BT Sport pundit Keown said: 'It's right up there. I felt the chill on the back of my spine in the stadium when you see a great moment in football.

'Just look... the audacity to take that on and then to have the ability from inside his own half.

'It was remarkable. The referee manages to get out of the way of it. Great strike.'

Keown added: 'It was one of the great moments in the Premier League, that strike from Wayne Rooney.

'He's rolling back the years. Who said he was finished?'

Speaking later on BBC Match of the Day, Ian Wright joked: 'I couldn't kick it that far in my prime.

'It's the timing and the fact that he's gone with his laces. The pace that the ball is coming at him... it was brilliant.'

Danny Murphy said: 'It's a mindset, because the safety one is to try to cut across it, get a load of side foot on it to get it up and on target.

'But he goes laces. It's an incredible strike. What a player and what a performance.'
