Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain yet to adapt to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool: ‘I’ve been set in one way my whole career’

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has admitted he is still trying to adapt to the methods of Jurgen Klopp and believes his long spell as an Arsenal player has made the process more difficult.

The England international brought an end to a six-year spell at the Emirates to make a £35million move to Liverpool in the summer, but has so far failed to see the increase in first-team opportunities that he had been hoping for.

Although critics have been quick to question his decision to make the move, the 24-year-old says his lack of playing time has been down to an inability to deliver Klopp's tactical instructions. But he remains confident he is moving towards full conversion.

He told Liverpool's official website: 'It’s a different style of play here. I think you’ll find that anywhere you go, different managers have different demands, but I think maybe for me, I’ve been set in one way for basically my whole career at the top level.

'Some boys might chop and change every couple of years, going to different clubs with different ideas and philosophies, but for me I’ve only known one way.

'If I’m coming off the bench he tells me my role first, he’ll say: "Make sure you help Alberto out and get back here and when we attack you’re an attacker, and when we defend you’re a proper midfielder", I’ll say "yeah, no problem".

'Then just before I go on he’ll tap me and go: "By the way, maybe it’s a good idea to shoot and score!"

'I’ve definitely got the idea and I know in my head what he demands. You say "fully up to speed" - it’s maybe one of those things that can take longer than that. I think the more I play and the more consistently I play I’ll be physically fully up to speed with the demands.'

Since joining Klopp at Anfield, Oxlade-Chamberlain has started just five matches in all competitions and appeared off the bench a substantial 11 times, seemingly mimicking the role he had to endure under Arsene Wenger.

But he has started their last two Premier League games, providing the assist in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea and playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over Stoke, suggesting he may finally be winning the favour of his new manager.
