Everton enquire about Arsenal's Theo Walcott with plans for January move as club eye Romelu Lukaku replacement

  • Theo Walcott has played nine games for Arsenal in a reduced role this season
  • Everton manager Sam Allardyce is looking at the forward as a potential target
  • Toffees' chiefs have asked about Walcott's availability for a move next month

Everton have made enquiries about Theo Walcott's January availability as Sam Allardyce looks to the Arsenal forward to boost his frontline.

Allardyce is desperate to find Premier League quality reinforcements to his squad to guide Everton up the table having taken over as boss last week.

Walcott fits that criteria and the Toffees have asked about the England international, who is yet to start a top-flight game this season.

Allardyce picked Walcott in the only squad of his short-lived reign as England manager, bringing him on as his second substitute in September's 1-0 win over Slovakia.

Now, the new Everton boss sees Walcott as a solution to the lack of pace he inherited in the sluggish side sacked predecessor Ronald Koeman assembled in the summer.

Walcott would also be a versatile option and a significant goal threat who could play wide or in the centre forward role that Everton struggled to fill after Romelu Lukaku's exit to Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger has rarely called upon the 28-year-old this season, fielding him three times as a substitute in the Premier League with his other six appearances coming in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Paddy Power before taking the Everton job, Allardyce said: 'I understand why they didn't replace Lukaku – nowadays that's such a hugely difficult piece of business.

'There's such a lack of top quality strikers, not just in England but literally across the world today.

'But still, the club needs someone to get goals and change those results around.'
