Liverpool 1-1 Everton: Wayne Rooney relentless and reliable as Dejan Lovren costs Reds - PLAYER RATINGS

Wayne Rooney converted a 77th-minute penalty kick as Everton made a mockery of Liverpool's Merseyside derby dominance to rescue an unlikely 1-1 draw.

Liverpool had 79 per cent of possession and registered 23 shots to Everton's three, but the locals rivals were forced to settle for a point apiece after Rooney cancelled out Mohamed Salah's first-half opener.

Sportsmail's DOMINIC KING was at Anfield to run the rule over the players involved.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3)

Simon Mignolet 6 – Apart from rushing out to win a tackle on Oumar Niasse, his biggest challenge was staying warm in the snowfall.

Joe Gomez 7.5 – He'll be a central defender one day but, for now, he is an excellent right back and caught the eye yet again in a big game.

Ragnar Klavan 7 – Relatively untroubled all afternoon. Nothing fussy in terms of his approach but just did things simply and effectively.

Dejan Lovren 5.5 – Had cruised through the game until his aberration, his inexplicable push gifting Everton a chance to level.

Andrew Robertson 6 – Been a tough start at Anfield in terms of not playing. He was neat and tidy but didn't always have an end product.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 5 – A surprise inclusion with Philippe Coutinho rested but did little to vindicate his selection.

Jordan Henderson 6 – Made more passes (60) in the first half than the entire Everton team but not enough got into dangerous areas.

James Milner 6.5 – Steady and reliable, barely wasted a pass. Terrific cross from the right almost created a goal for Salah.

Mohamed Salah 7.5 – Liverpool lost their spark when he was substituted. Scored a brilliant goal and could have had two more.

Dominic Solanke 6 – Shock to see him start. Never got any clean sights of the target and was eventually substituted.

Sadio Mane 6 – Involved in the definitive moment of the match when missing a glorious chance just before half-time. Should have scored.

Manager: Jurgen Klopp 6 – When all is said and done, his team selection will cause the greatest debate. Too many changes killed Liverpool's rhythm.

EVERTON (4-5-1)

Jordan Pickford 7 – It wasn't as if he was overworked to keep the score at one. Safe hands when he was called into action.

Jonjoe Kenny 7 – Any early nerves were soon dispelled as this local lad left every ounce of himself on the pitch to get a point.

Mason Holgate 7 – Allardyce name-checked him on his first day as player of great potential and this display will have delighted his manager.

Ashley Williams 7 – Has come in for huge criticism this season but didn't go hiding in the game that matters most to Evertonians.

Cuco Martina 5.5 – Baptism of fire and had a horrible task trying to contain Salah but he remained persistent.

Wayne Rooney 8 – Gleefully took his chance to make an impact on the one fixture he craved; worked relentlessly for the team. Use of the ball was excellent.

Tom Davies 5 – Will be distraught that he didn't get the chance to show his best form; made way at half-time.

Idrissa Gueye 7 – Booked for scything down Mane but that was the only thing he did wrong. Covered miles to protect his defence.

Gylfi Sigurdsson 6 – Lucky, perhaps, that he wasn't shown a red card for leaving his foot in on Henderson in the first half.

Oumar Niasse 5 – Game bypassed him but, in fairness, Everton barely got out of their half in the opening 45 minutes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 7.5 – Another who ran miles and eventually got his reward when forcing a critical mistake out of Lovren.

Manager: Sam Allardyce 7.5 – His tactics were primitive but they were effective and, by the end, the point was deserved.

Referee: Craig Pawson 7 – Got the main decision of the game absolutely correct.
