Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge are among the players on Southampton’s shopping list as they look to spend the £75million recouped from Virgil van Dijk’s move to Liverpool.

The Saints are aiming to move quickly as they look to strengthen their squad next month and will enquire about the England pair.

Wages could prove a stumbling block: Walcott — on the bench for Arsenal against Crystal Palace on Thursday night — earns £110,000-per-week, while Sturridge’s deal at Liverpool is worth £150,000-per-week and the Merseyside club do not want to let the striker leave next month.

Nevertheless, the duo are options Southampton wish to explore.

Alfie Mawson, the Swansea defender, is another target as Mauricio Pellegrino looks to replace Van Dijk. But Southampton face competition from West Ham, who are ready to bid £25m for the England hopeful.

Fulham left back Ryan Sessegnon is also on Southampton’s wishlist but they face competition from all of the Premier League’s top six clubs.

Tottenham are leading the chase for the 17-year-old, who has made 26 appearances for Fulham so far this season.

Pellegrino is looking to bolster the options at his disposal in January, although he will not have the entire £75m to reinvest, with Celtic due a sell-on fee following his £13m move from the Scottish champions in 2015.

Southampton have been pulled into the battle to avoid relegation after one win in their last 11 Premier League games.

They are currently 14th in the table, two points above the drop zone and face Manchester United next, on Saturday.
