Everton 0-2 Manchester United, RESULT: Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial goals help get Jose Mourinho's side back to winning ways

Manchester United's deserved victory at Goodison Park sees them climb back up to second in the table, while back-to-back defeats leave Everton ninth following the conclusion of the New Year's Day action.

90+2min: As Michael Keane heads wide following a corner, United send on Axel Tuanzebe for Juan Mata.

90min: We are entering three minutes of added time as United prepare a change.

87min: It's not just the Everton players who have had the stuffing knocked out of them following that Lingard goal. The home fans have also lost their voice as United send on Daley Blind for Lingard.

84min: Holgate goes into the book following a foul, with that Lingard goal all but knocking the stuffing out of Everton's attacking impetus.

82min: Final change for Everton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin replaces Niasse.

81min: Pickford isn't keeping this out though! Again Jesse Lingard collects a Pogba pass before cutting inside and bending a stunning strike across goal into the top corner from the edge of the box.

79min: For all of Everton's recent revival, it takes a brilliant Pickford save to keep them in the game. Pogba cut the ball back for Jesse Lingard whose first time strike from the edge of the box was heading for the bottom corner before the Everton stopper dived low to his left to get a strong hand to the ball and turn it wide.

77min: Jose Mourinho makes his first change, as goalscorer Anthony Martial makes a (very) slow departure off the field before being replaced by Marcus Rashford.

75min: I can't quite believe how dramatically this game has swung in the last 10 minutes. Everton could hardly get into the Manchester United half not so long ago, now United are rather hanging on and being out outfought all  over the pitch.

72min: All of a sudden Everton have started to dominate the game. Holgate easily fends off Pogba near the byline (brushing the midfielder off like a fly), with his cut-back then finding Tom Davies.

The midfielder fires first time at goal but the United defence block before scrambling the ball cleared.

70min: I haven't seen this since at least the first half - it's a spell of Everton possession. It's not all pointless either.

Oumar Niasse lays the ball wide for Mason Holgate before driving into the box to nod the return cross just wide of the near post.

65min: Everton remain all at sea as United continue to dominate. Paul Pogba's rasping near post shot is tipped over the bar by Pickford, while a Martial cut-back is turned behind for a corner.

62min: Here comes a double change for Everton as Yannick Bolasie and Wayne Rooney depart, with Aaron Lennon and James McCarthy coming on.

60min: Changes look to be on the way for Everton who have spent most of this second half defending their own penalty box. The Toffees just simply can't build any sustained attacks.

57min: It really has been coming but this this is a wonderful goal from Anthony Martial. The forward collects a pass following a United counter attack, controlling the ball before placing a fabulous 23-yard strike into the top corner. That's his seventh Premier League goal of the season and ninth overall.

55min: Everton are going to need to change something soon because Manchester United are coming alive. Paul Pogba collects a pass inside the box but from an unfavourable angle he can only turn a shot wide across goal.

53min: United have a bit of a spring in their step at the start of this half.

Shaw has looked lively on the left and after he runs onto an Anthony Martial through pass, his dangerous low cross is tuned behind for a corner. One Everton manage to clear.

52min: Off the post! It's the closest we have come to an opening goal as Juan Mata's stunning strike from 25 yards out across goal clatters off the post and out to safety with Pickford well and truly beaten.

50min: Plenty of bodies back for Everton, and although it's doing well to frustrate Manchester United it doesn't give them many avenues to attack the Red Devils.

It's a results driven business but I do wonder how long Everton fans, who love to watch attractive football, will put up with this negative style of play.

47min: Good start to the half for Manchester United. Luke Shaw lays the ball off to Juan Mata, whose rising drive from 25 yards is just tipped over by Jordan Pickford.

Wayne Rooney's first half heat map rather sums up the Toffees at Goodison Park.

The forward has spent much of the first period with possession inside his own half but has found opportunities to get ahead and help the Toffees attack.

Because like the day's 3pm Premier League games it's goalless at half-time following a very low key first period.

Still, all those games saw goals in the second period and we can hope for the same at Goodison Park. Because sometimes hope is all we have...

45min: There will be one added minute at Goodison Park. One minute too long if you ask me...

43min: First booking of the game and it's for Wayne Rooney who is cautioned after chopping down Anthony Martial who was in full stride on the counter attack.

42min: It's good to see someone try and actually shoot on goal but Jesse Lingard appeared to have better options after charging from a central position at the Everton defence before dragging wide from 20 yards.

40min: Everton, roared on and encouraged by the home fans, are starting to show some interest going forward but as the ball is fed wide to Mason Holgate on the right, his low ball into the box is disappointing as David de Gea collects comfortably at the near post.

'A knowing look by Mourinho to his bench after Herrera gives the ball away again. Not a happy man.'

37min: Good effort from Pogba whose long range effort from 20 yards curls just past the far post via a small Tom Davies deflection.

'Manchester United very passive in this game so far. There is no intensity about them at all. There is sure to be some Christmas tiredness in their legs but this display says more about their mental state than any physical issues so far. They are well in the game, though. Everton not much better so far.'

35min: The ball falls loose for Herrera on the edge of the box but the Manchester United midfielder fires a good yard or two over the bar. That's about as exciting as it has got.

33min: It remains a tough watch so far at Goodison Park. Not much ambition from Everton to attack and Manchester United are hardly showing too much urgency going forward.

30min: Bolasie has the legs on Lindelof this evening, but he just hasn't seen the ball often enough on the left as his cross fails to find a blue shirt inside the United box.

29min: United starting to force the issue. Luke Shaw plays a through ball on the left for Martial to run onto, with the forward's resulting low cross into the box palmed away by Pickford before Everton clear.

27min: Half-chance but nothing more for Manchester United. Juan Mata's free-kick into the box is met by Rojo but his header although on target is far too weak and it gives Pickford an easy save to make.

24min: Fantastic last ditch defending from Marcos Rojo. Oumar Niasse robs Phil Jones of the ball on the edge of the box and after charging into the penalty area is in a great position to open the scoring only for Rojo to slide in and divert the ball wide for a corner. Crucial challenge.

22min: There's been promise to the United attacks but still nothing from the visitors to really get Jordan Pickford working in the Everton goal.

Ander Herrera plays a wonderful through pass for Anthony Martial, but the striker's first touch let shim down as the ball trickles through to the Everton stopper.

'The sort of half where four touches are taken when only two will do. It's a bit boring so far. Why do United feel the need to have Matic sitting on Tom Davies?'

'Quite a flat start here at Goodison. Everton enjoying territory but not much impetus about their play.

'Wayne Rooney has seen a lot of the ball but has wasted much of it. Surprised to see Anthony Martial up front for United.

'Thought this would have been the day for Marcus Rashford to have a rare start as a centre forward.'

14min: Not the brightest starts to the game in truth. Paul Pogba manages to break into the Everton but his dangerous cut-back somehow fails to find a team-mate as Everton clear.

11min: Everton have another set-piece opportunity now with a corner. Rooney's delivery is not that much better though as Manchester United clear at the near post.

9min: Rain or no rain, that's rubbish from Wayne Rooney whose free-kick from out wide sails over everyone's head inside the box and out to safety.

7min: It's Manchester United who are attempting to get the ball down and play but so far there is no penetration to their attack as they continue to adapt to the wet conditions.

4min: The rain is falling quite heavily at Goodison Park and as a result neither side has really started that well on the ball in the slippery conditions although Wayne Rooney wins a corner after his shot deflects wide off Phil Jones.

1min: It takes just 30 seconds for Yannick Bolasie to turn on the burners down the left flank, fending off Victor Lindelof with ease before his cross into the box is confidently claimed by David de Gea.

'Very surprised there’s no Marcus Rashford in the Manchester United XI today. Anthony Martial through the middle is something we’ve not seen too often before.'

A late, late goal at Turf Moor from Ragnar Klavan has handed Liverpool all three points and a 2-1 win at Burnley. That result leaves Liverpool now level on 44 points with United in the Premier League table. Lose by two goals here today and Mourinho's men will slip below their biggest rivals into fourth place. Not that he'll be thinking about anything other than the win, of course.

For the hosts, Wayne Rooney captains against his former side but £50million record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson can only make the bench. Youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin drops to the bench as Big Sam turns to the more physical presence of Oumar Niasse as the central striker. Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Keane are also former United players in the line-up.

Mourinho has turned to Anthony Martial rather than Marcus Rashford to fill the void up front left by injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Luke Shaw keeps his place but Henrik Mkhitaryan is benched again. Paul Pogba is pushed further forward with Ander Herrera coming in to play behind him in midfield.
