Carlos Carvalhal labels January transfer window a 'nightmare' as Swansea wait on new signings

Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal has called the transfer window 'a nightmare' as he attempts to steer the Premier League's bottom club away from danger.

Carvalhal has yet to add to the Swansea squad since he succeeded Paul Clement just before the turn of the year.

Swansea have been linked with ambitious moves for Atletico Madrid pair Kevin Gameiro and Nicolas Gaitan and Ajax winger Amin Younes, and Carvalhal admits that transfer negotiations are difficult in modern-day football.

'We are in the process about players, but nothing is finalised,' Carvalhal said, ahead of Monday's home game against Liverpool.

'Don't ask me if we are near because you never know in negotiations what can happen if other sides create a problem at the last minute.

'The transfer window is a nightmare. Sometimes you think everything is sorted, but then comes a problem and then another problem.

'But all of us who are working on this at the club expect a minimum of one player in the last days (of the window).

Argentine international Nicolas Gaitan has also been under consideration from the Swans

'It is not easy, but we are still fighting for good players. I don't know if we can bring a player in the next days.

'We were not far away on our part (for one player), but negotiation is very hard with football players nowadays.'

Carvalhal admits he thinks about new signings from the moment he wakes up in the morning.

'I woke up at six o'clock today and I was thinking of two or three players straight away,' he said.

'But then I must prepare the team and be focused on my players. As soon as training is over I have to go again and think about players.

'Negotiations make me a little nervous because it is very difficult to achieve players.

'But we are working very hard with honest arguments, so let's see if we can achieve what we want.'

Swansea remain four points from safety with 15 games left to play.

But Carvalhal has overseen an improvement during his five matches in charge, with the only setback being a somewhat unfortunate defeat to Tottenham.

Swansea have also monitored Ajax winger Amin Younes as they try to get out of trouble

'The response has been fantastic, the commitment and attitude is there,' Carvalhal said.

'I don't believe any fan can complain since I arrived that any player has not given the maximum in every game.

'So I won't bring people in just to make people happy that we have done transfers.

'I understand the fans are frustrated and they are correct about the situation.

'If I was a politician I would try and answer and say things to benefit the fans.

'But I would not be a good politician, because I don't want to point people in the wrong way and promise everything.'
