BROTHERS IN ARMS: Arsenal's World Cup winning trio will miss the start of the new season [AFP]

Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil will return to training next week after their exploits in Brazil this summer.

The trio will all miss Sunday’s curtain-raising Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Wembley.

They have also been ruled out of the opening day meeting with Crystal Palace at Emirates Stadium on August 16, and could even miss the trip to Everton seven days later.

Wenger admits the situation is hardly perfect, but believes it is neccessary to ensure they don’t suffer from burnout before the season kicks into top gear.

“It’s not ideal,” the Frenchman said. “But the final of the World Cup was on the 13th of July, and when they go back to Germany they lose a few days for celebration.

“They played seven games in the World Cup plus the whole English season.

“Having the experience of a team that has won the World Cup, it is also difficult mentally to come back and be sharp and hungry straight away again.

“You have a choice. You can get them back very quickly and lose them in October, or you can give them a needed rest and build them up again."

Wenger also revealed that England ace Theo Walcott is on course for a return to first-team action at the end of August.

The 25-year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury in the FA Cup win over Tottenham earlier this year, but is making good progress in his recovery and could be set for a return against their north London rivals, whom they face on September 27.

“He is planned to come back into the group by the 31st of August, beginning of September at the latest,” Wenger said. “He is not yet completely ready.”
