Man United star Luke Shaw was criticised by Jose Mourinho

The Portuguese claims the England international ruled himself out of contention to face the Swans just hours before kick off.

But sources close to Shaw have told The Times that Mourinho’s account is not accurate.

It’s also suggested that Shaw was in discomfort last week with pain in the back of his right leg - the one he broke during United’s clash with PSV Eindhoven over a year ago.

Meanwhile, Chris Smalling, who was also criticised by Mourinho for missing the game, reportedly played the whole of United's 4-0 hammering by Chelsea after having painkilling injections in his foot.

Speaking after the 3-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium, Mourinho launched a thinly veiled attack on the pair.

"To compete you have to go to the limit," Mourinho said.

"It is cultural for some – and that is not my culture. More than me, it is Manchester United.

"We have players with 'problems.'

Man United boss Jose Mourinho slammed Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling

"At every sport - and I know because I have friends in other sports and they play at the highest level in their sport - and how many times they play when they are not 100 per cent."

Shaw was snapped up for £25m from Southampton in 2014.

Smalling was bought from Fulham in 2010 when he’d played just 13 games for the Cottagers.
