Olivier Giroud scored a sublime goal in Arsenal's win over Crystal Palace

Giroud opened the scoring with a superb over the shoulder volley after 17 minutes against Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace.

And Wenger put his fellow Frenchman’s acrobatic finish in the all-time top five Arsenal goals in his 20-year reign.

“He transformed that goal into art and art causes surprise because of the beauty of the movement,” said Wenger.

“Any goalscorer is ready to take any part of his body, even his little toe, to score a goal.

Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Olivier Giroud after his goal

“That is a goal nobody will forget. He brings the unexpected and we all come to football for the unexpected.

“I’ve had many great players and great strikers and that is certainly in the top five goals, along with Dennis Bergkamp at Leicester and Newcastle, Thierry Henry against Real Madrid and Liverpool, Kanu at Chelsea.

“Olivier scores important goals. He scores at Man United with a special header, scores in the 86th minute against West Brom, he scores goals with weight.”

Giroud’s goal was immediately compared with a similar one by Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s a week earlier in the 3-0 win over Sunderland.

But Giroud played down his super strike, although he revealed he had kept the match ball, something usually only done after a hat-trick.

“I was a bit lucky but it was the only thing I could do, the ball was behind me and I tried to hit it with a backheel,” he said.

“Maybe his [Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s] goal inspired me. It’s the only thing you can do in that position.

“We have a few games to come before the very important Chelsea one so we want to to keep winning before we go to Stamford Bridge.”

Arsenal’s victory took them to third and was sealed through a second goal, from Alex Iwobi.

The 20-year-old played as a No.10 with Mesut Ozil absent through flu.

And Wenger was impressed with the youngster, saying: “He is always available, quick in his movement, wants the ball, can hold people off.

“He had a very good game and now he starts to score.”

Sam Allardyce's Crystal Palace take on Swansea tomorrow

Palace boss Sam Allardyce was left worried about how his relegation-threatened team will handle having to play bottom club Swansea so quickly, with the match at Selhurst Park tomorrow.

“We’re thin on the ground,” he said. “Why can’t we play Wednesday?

“I don’t know who does the fixtures but he really needs sacking, Swansea have 24 hours on us.

“You want a fair crack at it with so much at stake.”
