The Toffees have signed the Manchester United captain 13 years after he moved in the opposite direction.
Rooney, who was valued at around £10m going into the final year of his Red Devils contract, was granted a free transfer by the Europa League holders.
The England star was a product of the Toffees’ academy before making a £28m move to United in 2004 at the age of 18.
He is understood to have taken a significant pay cut to play under Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.
