Benjamin Mendy will miss Man City’s Premier League opener due to a thigh injury

City have splash the cash so far this summer with their most recent acquisition being Monaco defender Mendy.

The French full-back passed his medical and signed a five-year contract at the Etihad on Monday.

The 23-year-old was not involved in City’s stunning 4-1 pre-season win over Real Madrid yesterday because he is currently nursing a slight thigh injury.

And that fitness issue will mean he’s set to miss City’s Premier League opener against Brighton on August 12.

City boss Pep Guardiola said: "Unfortunately he is a little bit injured and is not ready for the next two or three weeks."

Mendy’s injury should mean fellow new star Danilo starts against Brighton.

The £26m signing did make his City debut against former club Real in Los Angeles.

Guardiola is delighted that his defensive reinforcements have added some much needed intensity to his ranks.

He said: "This is pre-season, we lost the last game against United but did good things.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola is delighted with intensity of his new defensive signings

"Today was good for the confidence of the players, the way we played with intensity and the level of the performance.

"We want to compete with everyone, our dream is to be more stable and solid. Kyle Walker and Danilo helped us increase our intensity, as will Mendy.

"The result is not important, it's the way we tried to fight for each and the way we played which is important for our future."

Mendy could make his Premier League debut when City host Everton on August 21.
