Matic is heading to Old Trafford in a £40m deal.

He follows Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof in putting pen to paper this summer.

Getting in a new midfield anchorman has been a top priority for Mourinho.

He’s landed Matic, but The Telegraph report Tottenham ace Dier was the man he really wanted for the role.

But Spurs refused to sell the England international, forcing United to look elsewhere.

That’s despite Dier himself reportedly being up for a move.

He wanted to play under Mourinho but Tottenham wouldn’t play ball.

Radja Nainggolan of Roma was another star liked by the United boss.

But the Belgian wasn’t keen on quitting the Italian club, leaving the Manchester giants to go for Matic instead.

The Serb wanted the move and Chelsea have already signed his replacement in Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Bakayoko joined earlier this month from Monaco in a £40m deal.

When quizzed about Matic after last night’s friendly against Valerenga, Mourinho said: “I'm waiting for news.

"I know that he wants that very, very much and when a player wants very, very much the chance is bigger, the chance is bigger.

“So I think we have a chance but in football until it's official, I saw so many things happen that I refuse to say more than I am telling you now."
