The midfielder only completed his £40m move from Chelsea two days ago, yet was named in the Red Devils’ starting line-up tonight.

And while his performance was typically understated, it was what he did off the pitch that grabbed fans’ attention.

Matic was seen chasing the ball off the touch line in the closing stages of the first half.

Manchester United's new midfielder Nemanja Matic hugged a female fan

He then kicked it into the crowd in frustration at not being able to keep it in – but was shocked to see it landing square in the face of a woman in the front row.

The Serbian international instantly ran over to his victim – whose glasses appeared to be broken – to hug her as an apology.

Surrounding supporters applauded the gesture and it also proved popular with United fans back at home.

Matic then walked back on to the pitch with huge applause

“Matic won the ball back and then kicked it at a woman's face in the crowd…Elite baller,” one wrote.

Another added: “Lol Matic accidentally kick the ball and it hit a fan in the face, poor lady.”

A third commented: “Ball ricochets off Matic and hits a fan in the crowd who proceeds to give her a little hug and a smile. Memorable debut, indeed!”
