The Chelsea defender looked like he was in serious trouble when Danny Welbeck hounded down on him just a few metres from the Blues goal, in the first half of the Community Shield clash.
Clearing the ball out of play would have been the most sensible and risk-free option.
But Luiz had a completely different idea.
He first launched the ball over Welbeck and then just as the Gunners forward tried to grab the ball again, he flicked it back to Thibaut Courtois, using the back of his head.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea fans watching the moment were amazed at Luiz’s incredible skill.
“Haha, David Luiz almost sent Welbeck back to Manchester United's reserve team,” one wrote.
Another added: “David Luiz will not make heaven for that.”
And a third wrote: “David Luiz is the best defender in the world after Ramos.”
Per Mertesacker was forced off in the first half after a gruesome collision with Gary Cahill left blood pouring from his nose.
