Paul Merson thinks the Red Devils should offer up to £70m for Alexis Sanchez.

The Arsenal forward is in the last year of his contract and could still leave this summer.

The Gunners are adamant he’s going nowhere, but Starsport columnist Merson thinks money talks.

In his Starsport column, he wrote: “Manchester United should make a bid of more than £50m for Alexis Sanchez because he could bring them the title.

“I wouldn’t get too carried away by the way they steamrolled West Ham last Sunday because they are still a player short for me. For the first 25 minutes or so of that game they never looked like scoring.

Manchester United should offer £70m for Alexis Sanchez

“It was just like last season all over again. Then a bit of magic and they’re in front. But will they do that every week?

“In the end West Ham just rolled over. I didn’t fancy United at the start of the season and I didn’t see anything in that game to change my mind.

“But if they got Sanchez, I would. He would make a massive difference.

“Arsenal won’t sell him to a rival for £50m but if United offered £60m or £70m he goes. United can afford it as well.

“They would get most of it back in shirt sales.

“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world and their club shop is the size of a shopping centre. They should go for him.”

Jose Mourinho has given up on Gareth Bale and turned his attentions toward Raphael Varane.

Spanish outlet Don Balon say United are ready to offer the France international a huge contract to get him to leave Real Madrid.

Bale was being chased all summer but United have given up the ghost.

And his team-mate Varane is now the Madrid star Mourinho wants.

However, the centre-back is said to be happy in Madrid and Mourinho has failed in previous attempts to sign the 24-year-old.

Chelsea’s Willian would be the perfect signing for United.

That’s the verdict of Daily Record and Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles.

The Chelsea star is wanted at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho - but the Blues are not willing to sell.

Mourinho has raided the Premier League champions for Nemanja Matic this summer, but Willian won’t be following suit.

In the Transfer Window podcast, Castles said: “It’s comparable to Matic, he know exactly what he was getting, a guy who understood his tactical system and could play in different ways.

“He (Willian) was the ideal candidate because he can play right, behind, left, does the defensive as well as the attacking work.”
