The Manchester United legend – who sealed a return to Merseyside last month – scored the opener in yesterday’s clash (August 21).

It was the second goal in as many games for the 31-year-old and although City managed to salvage a 1-1 draw late on, it was still an impressive performance from the Toffees.

Following the result, Rooney was interviewed on Sky Sports by Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher.

And he couldn’t help but send a cheeky jibe towards his rival club.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher joked about Everton's record with Wayne Rooney

“Wayne, with the players you’ve brought in, there’s a lot of excitement there,” Carra said.

“You’ve come in yourself so do you think you’ve got enough that you could actually win a derby game?”

Everton have failed to beat their biggest rivals Liverpool in the last 14 Merseyside derbies.

And Reds fans understandably loved the hilarious question from Carragher.

Rooney has scored two goals in two appearances for the Toffees

“Superb,” one wrote. "Love Carra. Like a real-life troll.”

Another added: “Carragher takes no prisoners haha.”

While a third simply commented: “Bantagher.”
