After being promised a significant transfer budget by owner Mike Ashley, Toon chief Rafa Benitez has voiced his concern that promises have not been met and targets have not been pursued.

The Spaniard has been told he must sell players before bringing any new additions into the squad, meaning the club face a hectic two days of negotiating before the window closes on Thursday evening.

With a whole host of names linked, what business can Newcastle fans expect to be completed before tomorrow's 11pm transfer deadline?

Newcastle transfer news: Rafa Benitez faces a busy 48 hours

In a surprising turn of events, Newcastle’s top scorer last term Dwight Gayle, is free to leave the club.

The forward has been linked with moves to Championship sides Fulham and Leeds United, with the latter being told they must pay £18m to bring him to the club.

Benitez is unimpressed with Gayle’s reaction to both being subbed in the opening two games of the season and being left out of the squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win over West Ham.

The former Crystal Palace striker has fallen behind new signing Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the pecking order.

Another likely departure is defender Grant Hanley. The Scot has yet to feature for the Magpies in the league this season, despite solid performances in Newcastle’s Championship winning season.

Even an injury to new signing Florian Lejeune has failed to revive Hanley’s career on Tyneside, with Benitez opting to play Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark in his absence.

Norwich City are in pole position to sign the former Blackburn Rovers defender as the two clubs have agreed a fee.

The only potential stumbling block could be Hanley’s £40,000-a-week wages and the fact he has four years remaining on his current contract.

Hanley is set for a medical at Carrow Road in the next 48 hours.

If Newcastle are to lose a forward before the end of the window, Benitez will be desperate for a replacement to be brought in.

Liverpool’s Divock Origi has been touted as a potential option, but the Magpies face competition from European heavyweights such as Juventus, Inter Milan and Monaco.

Any potential deal may hinge on whether Jurgen Klopp’s side can push through a deal for Monaco’s Thomas Lamar, with Origi potentially being used as a makeweight in the transfer.

Liverpool, however, want assurances that the Belgian will play regular football before he returns to Melwood next May.

Another deal which may depend on transfers elsewhere is one for Chelsea’s Kenedy.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the North East for the last few weeks but Antonio Conte has been keen to hold on to the player until he has brought in fresh faces.

If the Blues can complete a deal for Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has reportedly turned down an offer from the champions, then it is likely to mean Kenedy will leave on a temporary basis.

The youngster will be looking for a fresh start after being sent home from Chelsea’s pre-season tour of China due to offensive social media posts.
