Manchester United made an enquiry for Gareth Bale yesterday, according to El Pais journalist Diego Torres Romano.

The Real Madrid forward has been linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer, with Jose Mourinho on the hunt for a winger.

Romano tweeted: “Today a United emissary has asked Madrid if there is provision to negotiate the sale of Bale. The first answer has been no.

“Florentino does not want to sell Bale. But in Madrid there is a sector of partisanship to sell already, taking advantage of market inflation.

“Bale has not learned Spanish in 4 years. But he likes Madrid. He never imagined he could win 2 Champions doing so little.

“3 Champions! Yes, Bale has won 3. The same as Raúl and two more than Zidane as a player. Other times…”

Meanwhile, reports in Spain suggest United offered £50m for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio.

According to Diario Gol, the Red Devils submitted the bid for Asensio while making enquiries for Gareth Bale.

Real laughed off the bid and are set to raise his release clause from £74m to £552m.

Asensio has emerged as a key player for Real and is viewed as indispensable by head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Finally, Matty Willock has completed a loan move to FC Utrecht.

The 21-year-old will spend the rest of the season with the Dutch club.

He is yet to make his first-team debut but was on the bench twice last term.

A statement read: “Everyone at the club wishes Matty a successful season in Holland.”
