De Gea has been a consistent target for Real Madrid

That is according to Italy shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon.

De Gea has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid for the past few years but a move has failed to materialise.

The Spaniard came close to moving to the Bernabeu back in 2015.

Keylor Navas was set to move in the opposition direction but the swap deal broke down late in the transfer window.

But according to Juventus legend Buffon, Madrid should avoid making another move for the player.

Speaking to Marca, the 39-year-old said: "Real Madrid have not lacked anything over the past 10 years, as they have bought the best footballers.

"Keylor Navas is a great goalkeeper, despite what some say.

"They have won two Champions Leagues with him and he has often been important on the way to winning them."

Navas has faced criticism in the past over his performances

Real Madrid have won three of the last four Champions League competitions and Buffon believes there is no need for a new number one at the club.

“I don’t believe there is a need to sign, as the results have shown that they are winning as it is," added Buffon.

De Gea recently said playing for Manchester United was like a 'dream'.

His current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2019.
