Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hasn't lost hope

The Gunners are in the depths of despair after losing 4-0 at Liverpool in their last game thanks to an Anfield horror show.

It was a second straight loss and things didn’t go any better on transfer deadline day either.

They failed to seal a £92m deal for Monaco star Thomas Lemar and pulled the plug on Alexis Sanchez’s move to Manchester City.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was sold to Liverpool while Wenger and his side have been heavily criticised by a host of former players.

Starsport revealed on Monday how chief executive Ivan Gazidis had told staff they can now challenge for the title after improving their squad.

When asked if Arsenal can be title challengers this season, Wenger said: “Yes, why not?

“Okay, we lost at Liverpool but we can redress the situation very well and very quickly.

“Some teams who are the new favourites, they are not in a better position than us.”

Asked whether he believed Gazidis was right by saying Arsenal are now stronger, Wenger said: “I think we are strong enough, yes.

“Are we stronger? I think it depends on what period of the season. We had contrasting periods of the season last year.

“We have to show that you can improve the team by being together and improving together. Last year we made 75 points, we won the FA Cup and this year we have to do better.”

Wenger signed a new two-year deal at the end of last season after Arsenal beat Chelsea in the cup final.

Since then has been heavily criticised by some fans who believe it is time to bow out after 20 years in charge.

Ahead of today’s visit of Bournemouth, the 67-year-old added: “My personal situation is not important. What is important is Arsenal Football Club and the position of the team and that’s what I care about.”
