Ings - nearing a return to full fitness after his injury hell - suffered a number of ‘heavy challenges’ before being replaced by Yan Dhanda before half-time.

"It's more a precaution than anything," Under-23 team boss Neil Critchley told liverpoolfc.com.

"He felt something very early in the game and he wasn't quite right, so we're not taking any chances with Danny and there are plenty of first-team games to come.

"We'll just look after him and assess him, but I'm sure he'll be fine."

The unlucky striker was playing for the Reds’ development side in a bid to build up his fitness after sustaining a knee injury last term.

It was his second serious injury since joining Liverpool from Burnley in 2015.

Ings tore his anterior cruciate ligament less than three months into his maiden campaign at Anfield.

The 25-year-old spent the summer working on his rehabilitation following his second ACL problem.

Despite his wretched luck, Ings has pleaded with Liverpool fans not to feel sorry for him.

Speaking in August, he said: “At the end of the day, it was an injury and they’re part of the game.

“They happen to a hell of lot of people, especially nowadays with how fast the games are.

“The only thing I want from people is patience, which I have had in unbelievable levels and everyone has been so positive.

“I am where I want to be at this moment in time, but there’s still a lot of hard graft left for me to do before I am back to where I’m striving to get to.”

Ings, who has three years left on his contract, has been limited to just 11 appearances for the club.
