That is according to former Premier League striker Chris Sutton, who believes the Liverpool star has been harshly punished for an “accidental collision”.

Mane caught Ederson in the face with his boot after being fractionally beaten to a high ball by the City stopper.

Jurgen Klopp could now be deprived of Mane’s services for three domestic fixtures.

And Sutton explained: “The Mane one was an accident so it should be rescinded.”

Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie committed a similar foul in their 1-0 win at Swansea but avoided being sent off.

And Sutton added: “OK, so I understand why the red card was given but if you’re Jurgen Klopp and you’re seeing that today - the same challenge - why has Mane got a three-game ban?”

When challenged on his opinion by BBC Match of the Day 2 host Mark Chapman and fellow pundit Kevin Kilbane, Sutton said: “I’m saying it should be rescinded because it was an accidental collision.

“The reward is so great if he touches that round the goalkeeper.

“It was an accident. Can’t we just say it was an accident?

“You see the one today. Where’s the consistency?”

Mane is eligible to play in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Sevilla.
