Andre Ayew bagged his first Premier League goal of the season for West Ham against Huddersfield

The Ghana international proved to be the hero for the Hammers as they got their first Premier League win of the season.

West Ham saw off Huddersfield 2-0 at the London Stadium to delight under-fire boss Bilic.

Ayew was brought on just after the hour mark for star striker Javier Hernandez, much to the surprise of the supporters.

But eventually on 72 minutes, the Premier League’s bottom club broke the deadlock as Ayew set up Pedro Obiang, who saw his shot take a huge deflection and bounce in off the post.

Five minutes later, Aaron Cresswell’s whipped in corner was met by Jose Fonte, and with the ball loose, Ayew was the quickest to react and prod home.

Bilic would have faced a mountain of questions if his inspired sub did not pay off.

Ayew has not excelled in a West Ham shirt since joining from Swansea last summer, scoring eight times in all, but his contribution was crucial last night.

Robert Snodgrass raised eyebrows when he left for Aston Villa and claimed Bilic asked him where he wanted to play as he was being introduced for his West Ham debut last term.

But when asked what Bilic told him before coming on last night, Ayew told Starsport: “Not much, just to do my job.

“I went away for the internationals, came back and had a little injury but managed to get on the teamsheet to play.

“I managed to get on and get a goal too, it’s important for any player to score.

“We can build on this victory. We don’t have to get too excited. We’ve played at home - won - and now we go to West Brom which will be a very difficult place to go.

“We have to be patient, keep working hard. Three points doesn’t change things. One week is different from another week.

“Now we’re going to smile for 48 hours but we have to get back to work straight away and get some points at West Brom.”

Andre Ayew poked in West Ham's second from inside the six-yard box

On the atmopshere in the dressing room, Ayew added: “It’s relief, but we’re not over excited because we know we did not start the season well. But we’re on the front foot now.

Pressure has been relieved on Bilic somewhat at West Ham, and Ayew said: “We are happy for the manager.

“[Also] for the fans, for the players ourselves, we are a team, we are together. Times were tough, we fought as a team to make it happen and got the first points. We now work hard to get more.”
