The Portuguese has seen his side enjoy an impressive start to the season, turning in a number of swashbuckling attacking displays.
And they took their goalscoring tally for the campaign to 15 in all competitions with Tuesday night’s comfortable 3-0 win over Basel.
Mourinho deployed a 4-3-3 system in the Champions League encounter, with Ashley Young and Daley Blind operating at full-back.
Speaking post-match, Mourinho praised the marauding performance of Young, who set up Marouane Fellaini’s opener with a whipped cross.
He also took the opportunity to aim a dig at Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham - who’ve all opted to play with three centre-halves and wing-backs this term.
On Young, Mourinho said: "He did well. It’s quite trendy now, teams playing with five defenders, sometimes we like to say three, but I only see them with five.
"He gave us what Antonio would give us, I think they are both very good. But Antonio, after playing in Brazil and Ecuador and then Stoke, I felt that Ashley could do the job perfectly and he did it."
Chelsea and Arsenal’s 3-4-3 systems will go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Tottenham, meanwhile, face Swansea at Wembley a day earlier.
Whether Mourinho will have more to say about their tactics after United’s weekend showdown with Everton remains to be seen.
