The Chelsea legend played much of his career for the Special One and thinks the Portuguese loves to promote conflict as part of his style.

Mourinho has turned around United since taking over from Louis van Gaal, winning the Europa League and EFL Cup last season.

But Lampard thinks some players may struggle to play for an abrasive character like Mourinho.

“He’s demanding, he’s a demanding manager,” the Chelsea hero told BT Sport.

“He likes conflict, he kind of promotes the conflict, not in the group but outside and we’ve seen that, it’s very much a family thing.

“He changed my career personally when he came in, he gave me a self confidence.

“He’s very confident in himself, he portrays that to his players, I really enjoyed it.

“But some players can find him too demanding.”

Lampard thinks Mourinho is in the very elite class of managers in world football.

“There are special ones and I know he plays himself down,” he added.

“He’s certainly one of the best managers in the world, his record speaks for itself.

“Personality, his tactical nouse, I think we saw that last year, particularly in the Europa League final.”

United return to action on Sunday when they welcome Everton to Old Trafford in the Premier League.
