At least that’s the verdict of former United chairman Martin Edwards, who appointed the legendary Scot at Old Trafford back in 1986.

Mourinho’s team have followed up last season’s EFL Cup and Europa League success with an impressive start to the new campaign.

And they’ll be hoping to maintain a challenge on four fronts just as United so often did during Ferguson’s 26-and-a-half year spell as manager.

Edwards has now revealed he’s optimistic about his old side’s chances of mirroring the glory days of the Ferguson era under Mourinho.

Asked if he could see similarities between Mourinho and Ferguson, Edwards told Sky Sports: "Yes, I think so.

"Alex set such a fantastic record and example it was always going to be difficult for anybody, but with Jose's experience and the amount of trophies he's won over time I've got great hopes."

Edwards also praised Mourinho’s decision to prioritise winning the Europa League last term, as well as his transfer business this summer.

He added: "I think he is [the right man] having watched him last year. The home games were not particularly entertaining, but he was building a side.

"I thought he did exceptionally well to win two trophies last year. He gambled on winning the Europa League to get back in the Champions League and it paid off.

"United supporters were delighted, and what he's done since by the players he's bought in the summer, I think he's improved the squad.

"I'm excited this year, and for the first time in a while I feel as though we're back in exciting times."

Following Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Basel in the Champions League, United return to domestic action against north west rivals Everton on Sunday.
