The Senegalese international is to serve a three-match ban after Jon Moss deemed his high challenge worthy of a red card.
Ederson had to leave the field of play to receive stitches in his cheek but whether the foul merited a red card has been hotly debated.
However, Mane himself admits he didn't expect to be sent for an early bath.
"Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card," he said.
"But I'll accept it and try to forget it.
"I was going for the ball and I didn't have the intention to hurt him because I'm not that kind of player.
"I wish him a quick recovery.
"It's not easy for me because I love to play football and I enjoy helping my team to win games."
Both Ederson and Mane featured in their club's respective Champions League fixtures last night.
Manchester City ran out clear winners by beating Feyenoord 4-0 in Holland, while Mane couldn't inspire Liverpool to victory, as the Reds drew 2-2 with Sevilla.
Mane will now miss Liverpool's clash with Burnley and two games against Leicester.
The forward has received support from a number of pundits, who admitted they thought the decision and subsequent suspension was harsh.
