That’s the verdict of player-turned-pundit Chris Kamara, who can’t understand Saints’ decision to keep hold of the wantaway star.

Liverpool lined up Van Dijk as the man to bolster their defence towards the end of last season following his impressive stint at St. Mary’s.

But Southampton refused to do business with the Reds after accusing them of tapping the 26-year-old up in June.

Kamara revealed he was baffled that Van Dijk wasn’t allowed to move during an appearance on Thursday night’s edition of Sky Sports show The Debate.

Discussing Van Dijk with Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson, Kamara said: "Klopp was desperate to sign Van Dijk and Southampton have gone against all the principles with what they have been doing last few years.

"They have made a stance with Van Dijk. Why? Why have they made a stance with him?

"With that £50m they’ve done brilliantly every time they have bought a player and sold him.

"They have gone out and bought better or as good as.

"All of a sudden they decide to change their policy. Why? They had a system that worked."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been tipped to launch a raid for Van Dijk when the transfer window opens in January.
