That is according to former Premier League manager Glenn Hoddle.

The 34-year-old striker signed for Bournemouth following Sunderland’s relegation.

Despite his age, Defoe has continued to show he is sharp enough for the Premier League and still has an eye for goal.

He bagged his first for the Cherries on Friday in their 2-1 win over Brighton, but Hoddle feels he should be at a bigger club.

United strengthened their attack in the window by bringing in Romelu Lukaku for £75m and re-signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Meanwhile, Arsenal bought Alexandre Lacazette for a club-record £52m.

However, Hoddle believes both Premier League giants should have taken advantage of a bargain deal for Defoe.

"You know if you give him one chance [he's going to score]," Hoddle told BT Sport.

"I am so surprised one of the top six teams in this country haven't taken him and got him back in.

“Give him chances and he'll put the ball in the net. Some people they run out of steam at 33.

“This fella keeps himself fit and he only needs one chance in a game.

“If he was at United or Arsenal or something and he's coming on for a half hour every game, he would get four or five chances."

Defoe has forced his way back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad too, with the ex-West Ham and Tottenham forward turning 35 next month.

But while United and Arsenal may have wasted an opportunity in Hoddle’s eyes, Jose Mourinho’s men have not struggled for goals.

Manchester United have a joint-high 16 after five games, while the Gunners have just seven.
