The Reds crashed out of the Carabao Cup last night as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Leicester.

Liverpool dominated the first half but failed to take their chances.

And their leaky backline came back to haunt them as Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani netted after the break.

Liverpool’s defence has come into criticism and Klopp opted against strengthening at centre-half in the summer.

The Reds boss has supported his team for some time but he was far from impressed yesterday.

Klopp said: “We should have scored three. As long as you leave games open, you have to defend.

“That we concede like this, that makes me really, really sick. That's hard.

“But defending set-pieces is a thing, it's not the first ball obviously – we always had problems with this – now it's the second or third even. And the throw-in (big sigh).

“We always have to defend these situations better. (For the first goal) The second ball after the corner, it's close but it's not offside.

“So we need to make it more clear that it's offside. The only thing you can do is to push up – we didn't.

“With the second one it is a throw-in again. Everyone can imagine we know how to defend them but obviously we don't do it.

“Because always somebody else is doing it – that's how it is, it doesn't feel too cool but it's the truth.”

Jon Flanagan, Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan and Andrew Robertson made up Liverpool's vulnerable defence at Leicester.

When asked about Liverpool's work on set-pieces on the training ground, Klopp added: “We do it all the time.

“Everyone can imagine we know how to defend a set piece and a throw in. You change two or three players... I’m in the boat, I am not saying ‘I told you and you don’t know? (to the players)’.

“No, I feel really bad in the moment about this.

“It is not about not knowing, it is about doing it in this moment. That’s hard.”

Liverpool have the chance to redeem themselves on Saturday when they go back to Leicester in the Premier League (5.30pm).
