Manchester United are set to launch an £88m raid for Antoine Griezmann

Manchester United are set to launch a fresh raid on Atletico Madrid next summer in a bid to land Antoine Griezmann in a €100m (£88m) deal.

The Red Devils were keen to sign the French superstar earlier this summer, but abandoned the plan when it became clear he was unavailable.

But Atletico's decision to re-sign Diego Costa from Chelsea has increased the likelihood of United bosses making a renewed attempt to sign Griezmann.

The 26-year-old, who will face Chelsea at Estadio Metropolitano in a Champions League group clash tomorrow, had been expected to move to Old Trafford at the end of last season.

But Griezmann opted to stay at Atletico after they received a transfer ban stopping them from fielding any new players until January.

Phil Neville reckons Manchester City are just ahead of United in terms of being favourites to win the Premier League title.

“Well, after another 5-0 victory, you've got to say Manchester City are the most exciting side in Europe right now with the number of goals they are scoring,” he said on Sky Sports.

“They'll obviously have bigger tests but they are absolutely sensational to watch, and the pleasing thing for Pep Guardiola is that the team are keeping clean sheets as well.

“I would say the Manchester clubs are looking the best in the Premier League right now, with City shading it over United as favourites, but the question is whether that style can win them the title, because we know Jose Mourinho can deliver it with his approach.

“City are the most exciting side in the Premier League and you wouldn't want to be playing them at the moment, but United don't have to play them until November, so Mourinho has a lot of time to assess them.

“For now United just have to keep matching their results and not get too far behind with their goal difference because it is looking so close this season that it could be the deciding factor.”

Ian Wright believes Romelu Lukaku is loved at United and Alvaro Morata the same at Chelsea despite not being top targets for either club in the summer transfer window.

“It’s funny how the misery of a miss can lead to such a sensational hit, but that’s been the case for both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte,” the former Arsenal striker explained to The Sun.

“If Jose had got his first-choice striking target in the summer, Alvaro Morata would be leading the Manchester United attack.

“If Conte had landed his, then Romelu Lukaku would be back at Stamford Bridge and filling Diego Costa’s boots.

“I doubt either manager will ever be so delighted at having to switch their sights, given how both forwards have hit the ground running.

“And the reasons for that — as well as being top players, obviously — are clear to me.

“Both know they are loved, know they are the main man, and know they are in the right place at last.”
