Theo Walcott bagged a first-half brace.

Rob Holding also grabbed his first goal for the Gunners and Olivier Giroud converted a second-half penalty.

“Overall we had a team that was a mixture of experienced and young players,” Wenger said.

“We played with good pace, we maintained it for 65 minutes - the last 25 minutes were a bit more difficult.

“But I’m pleased with the performance.”

Jack Wilshere has returned to Arsenal following his loan stint at Bournemouth last season and is back to full fitness after a broken leg.

The England international started in central midfield for the Gunners tonight and impressed.

Wenger added: "He had an outstanding first half and he fought until the end.

"He is on a good way back to his best and he showed that tonight.

"He is at an age where a player usually gets to the best of his career.

"He has been stopped by a series of injuries. I just pray that he is not hampered any more.

"He has shown tonight he has not lost his quality."
