Kane has been feasting on goals all year long scoring an astonishing 41 goals in 35 games, including half a dozen hat-tricks.

In September alone the Tottenham striker helped himself to 13 for club and country.

And the 25-year-old credits the new healthy diet he is on thanks to his own personal cook.

“I’ve changed a lot off the pitch with the nutrition side of it,” said England’s captain tonight against Slovenia.

“It kind of clicked in my head that a football career is so short.

“It goes so quickly you have to make every day count. So I have a chef at home to eat the right food, helping recovery.

“You can’t train as hard as you’d like when you have so many games, so you have to make the little gains elsewhere, like with food. That will help me going into a tournament year, with my body and my recovery.

“I was always eating well, never badly. But I had a guy come round and explain what you could do, eating the right food at the right times.

“I got him round, spoke to him and it blew me away a bit. I’d never looked too much into it, but he explained what the body does and how he could help me recover.

“He helped me in the recovery from the injury, with certain foods I was eating. It opened my eyes a bit. I’d rather not say his name. He wasn’t a Spurs fan - he is now.

“I started doing that on January 1, a new year’s resolution.

“We had a baby on the way. We knew that would take up a lot of time.

“I was cooking, my missus was cooking, the food was getting boring... not my wife’s, just mine - actually, I’m not married yet!

“He’s there every day, Monday to Saturday, and leaves it in the fridge for Sunday.

“I hardly ever see him because I’m at training, but he’ll cook the food and leave it in the fridge. We’ve got a good plan going and it seems to be working.”

Clean-living Kane certainly cuts a contrasting figure to previous England skipper Wayne Rooney, who is currently serving a two-year ban for drink driving.

“I don’t drink alcohol during the season,” said Kane. “Off season, or if we win something... I’m not saying I never eat a bad thing.”

Pressed on what his guilty pleasure is, Kane said: “Apple crumble. But leading up to games, I want to maximise my potential.”

Boss Gareth Southgate has yet to confirm who will be his permanent skipper, but Kane appears to have all the ingredients.

“It’s absolutely the kind of role model you want,” said Southgate. “You’re talking about a player trying to maximise his ability and finding every edge.

“You want a mindset in a player that he wants to become one of the best in the world. For me, that’s a mindset who will inspire others.”
