United haven’t won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 but United have started the season strongly and are among the favourites to lift the trophy.

And Neville, who won the league six times during his time at Old Trafford, believes Mourinho’s focus should be on domestic success.

“For Manchester United, the Premier League at this moment is bigger than winning the Champions League,” he explained.

“Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired it has become a noose around the club’s neck, they can’t win the Premier League without him and it’s another year gone.

“When I obviously broke into the team it was 26 years (since they won the league) and they don’t want it to keep building and building and have that gap.

“I think for Jose the start of the building block was the trophies last year, but the actual foundation is the Premier League and United I think will want to win the Premier League more than the Champions League.”

Mourinho enjoyed a successful first season in Manchester, as he led United to glory in the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

They’ve looked even more dangerous since the addition of £75m striker Romelu Lukaku and they’re currently only second to arch-rivals Man City on goal difference.

United remain unbeaten in both the Premier League and the Champions League and Mourinho will be keen to bring the league title back to Old Trafford after a five year drought.

The Red Devils are back in action next weekend with a trip to Liverpool, before travelling to Benfica in the Champions League four days later.
