Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski hit a hat-trick to become Poland’s all-time leading goalscorer as they ran out 6-1 winners in Yerevan yesterday.

And former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has urged his side to improve in Sunday’s final qualifier.

“Problems are everywhere,” he said.

“We must do everything to ensure that this does not happen again in the match against Kazakhstan. There are no words.

“It was a shameful defeat. I am the captain of the team and I undertake all responsibility for defeat from Poland.”

Victory means Poland remain top of Group E and can qualify for next summer’s World Cup by beating Montenegro on Sunday.

Armenia are unable to qualify, having earned just six points so far, but will be aiming to restore some pride in their final match.

Despite his woes for his country, Mkhitaryan has been in unstoppable form for United this season, scoring twice and providing six assists in his first ten games.

That’s already one more assist than he managed in the entirety of last season and he’ll be hoping to add to that tally when United travel to Liverpool next weekend.
