That's what the the legendary Italian midfielder opened the door to after announcing his retirement yesterday.

Pirlo, 38, is currently with MLS side New York City and is poised to play out the regular season with them.

Once the campaign's over, he's decided to call time on his 22-year senior career.

Pirlo was linked with a move to the Premier League during Carlo Ancelotti's spell at Chelsea.

And he's refused to rule out heading for Stamford Bridge once he hangs up his boots.

Asked about what his future holds, Pirlo told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I do not know yet.

"I'll be back in Italy in December.

"Conte's deputy? They say things.

"I have ideas, but give me time to decide."

Conte is without an assistant after Steve Holland joined England's backroom staff on a full-time basis.

He coached Pirlo during his three-year stint as Juventus gaffer, as well as on Italy duty.

Chelsea return to Premier League duty on Saturday when they travel to Crystal Palace (3pm).
