The 17-year-old is one of the most highly-rated youth prospects currently on the books at Old Trafford – and he demonstrated why with a spectacular set piece late in the game in the U17 World Cup fixture yesterday.

He started the game on the bench but was handed the captain’s armband when he came on in the second half, rewarding his manager’s faith with a jaw-dropping curling effort from more than 20 yards out.

“Great 4-0 win vs Chile, happy with my goal but happier with the three points. We keep going!” the youngster wrote on Twitter after the game.

But supporters were sent potty after a clip of the goal was posted on social media site Reddit last night as United fans hailed the promising starlet.

“What a goal,” wrote one.

Another said: “Gomes was very lively when he came on.

“Tired defenders probably made his job easier. Peach of a free-kick, and should probably have had two assists, played some fantastic through balls and was generally very good with his link-up play.”
