The Catalan club chased Brazilian Coutinho since his compatriot Neymar joined PSG in a stunning £200m transfer.

Coutinho was the club’s first choice but after being rebuffed by Liverpool on numerous occasions, Barcelona signed French winger Ousmane Dembele from Dortmund.

Three bids were made, going as high as £118m, for the ex-Inter Milan ace, who handed in a transfer request at Liverpool.

But the Reds stood firm, and it has now been revealed that Portuguese midfielder Gomes was also proposed to Liverpool.

CalcioMercato report that Gomes was offered to Jurgen Klopp in a player-plus-cash deal but this was also rejected.

Former Valencia star Gomes has suffered a rough ride since his big-money move to Catalonia, and has been booed by his own fans on numerous occasions.

Meanwhile, Barca chief Oscar Grau confirmed the club will be in for Coutinho again.

He said: "We are ready to buy Coutinho in the winter market, or any player the technical staff request.

"We must forget about the price paid for Neymar last summer. After taxes we received about €188m in income and a direct financial impact on the club's treasury of €144m."
